Module 6

Anonymity - Being An Undercover Agent

The only way a shadow shopper can gather accurate and objective information is if they are completely unknown to the staff members and act as a normal customer. Shadow shoppers mustn't stand out from the crowd in any way. If they are identified as a shadow shopper then the results of the shop cannot be used, and they will not be able to shop that client again.

Never Identify Yourself As a Shadow Shopper

The cardinal rule of shadow shopping is:

WHEN YOU ARE ON ASSIGNMENT
YOU MUST NEVER EVER
EVER
IDENTIFY YOURSELF AS A SHADOW SHOPPER

Most businesses tell their staff that there is a shadow shopping program in place, but not how or when they will be shadow shopped. This means that the staff know that any customer could be the shadow shopper and hopefully make them more mindful of their service standards.

Some companies never tell their staff that they are being shadow shopped - so it is really important that you don't give the game away.

If staff suspect you are a Shadow Shopper then they may behave differently. This would invalidate the results, which is why it is important to remain incognito.

What To Do If Your Cover Is "Blown'

If you are asked by the staff if you are a Shadow Shopper don't 'come clean' and admit that you are. Instead, deflect. Respond along the lines of 'A shadow shopper? What's that?' and abort the shop gracefully at this point. Just behave normally, and leave as soon as possible.

Don't give the staff any further reason to be suspicious.

When filling in your report let us know that this has happened so that we can send another mystery shopper to complete the assignment.

Ways To Stay Incognito

  • Don't tell anyone other than your immediate family (husband, wife, partner, child) that you are working as a mystery shopper.

  • Don't mention it on any social media (Facebook, Twitter etc) and be very wary of any online forums, unless run by Shadow Shopper

  • Don't take notes or refer to instructions while you are working.

  • Read the instructions and the scenario beforehand, and check the questions that you will be looking for the answers to. Check what you are going to buy and any questions you are going to ask.

  • Do your homework and be prepared. Check the website of the business if you are not familiar with it, and use Google Maps Streetview if you don't know where it is.

  • Try to blend in with the other customers. Think beforehand what the 'normal' customer of that business would look like, how they would act, what they would say, what they would buy.

  • Don't stand out in any way. Don't behave or look different to any other customers.
